Manila Ocean Park - Philippines

Manila Ocean Park considers the first state-of-the-art Oceanarium which is located behind the Quirino Grandstand Luneta, Manila, Philippines. Its main attraction is a 25-meter long, 220 degree curved acrylic walkway tunnel. Aside from the Oceanarium itself, the marine park has also boutique mall, restaurant row, and function facilities. It is owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Group Ltd (COG); a company that specializes in the investment, building, and operation of public aquarium/oceanarium attractions. The Oceanarium journey is divided into six sections and each section will carry a Filipino name: “Agos”; “Bahura”; “Buhay na Karagatan”; “Pating”; “Ang Kailaliman”; and “Laot”. It replicates the water flow from a fresh water source that eventually leads to the open ocean, creating a model of interconnectedness between land and sea. It then takes one through the different depths of the sea showcasing each area’s beautiful and natural inhabitants.
Manila Ocean Park president Lim Chee Yong proudly said that the marine park would be among the most advanced ocean parks in Asia.

The Home at the Top of a Volcano

It's not every day one stumbles across a UFO, never mind one you can live in, and certainly never mind one plopped firmly atop a volcano—er, volcanic cinder cone, to be precise. But lo' and behold this curious desert dwelling located between Vegas and Los Angeles in Newberry Springs, Calif. popped up on our radar screen. Originally commissioned by aircraft-mechanics genius Vard Wallace as a personal retreat, the home was designed by prolific and versatile Southern California architect Harold Bissner, Jr. and completed in 1968. The inspiration? San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, a nuclear plant in northwestern San Diego county. The property now belongs to local semi-celebrity Huell Howser, who has hosted California's Gold, a travel show on the Los Angeles radio station KCET, for the past 20 years. Howser listed the property in September 2009, at which point Curbed LA described it as a "secret hideout where you watch your dastardly plans unfold on flat screens and cackle at your minions." Still lingering on the market for its initial ask of $750K, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom main house features a dome formed from concrete and bent-fir beams and grounded by glass walls; inside, a conversation pit keeps things centered around a fireplace. There's also a one-bedroom guest house, a lake, 60 acres of untarnished land, a three-car carport, a rooftop observation deck on top of that dome (360-degree views of the desert, anyone?) and, of course, the best part: brokerbabble that references a "stark, strong almost lunar landscape." Fun times! Anyway, despite the fact that it's had zero luck selling—with nary a price chop, either—over the last two years, Howser's clearly holding out for that one special architecture geek who wants a serious story to tell. Or perhaps just some rich kid who wants to live in a spaceship. By Sarah Firshein, CurbedNovember 23, 2011

Casa Manila Museum - Philippines

Casa Manila is a “colonial lifestyle” museum which is located in Gen. Luna St., Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. It is a 10-minute walk towards Aduana St., an alternative route would be to take any pier-bound PUJ in Quezon City and get off at Aduana St. The museum recreates the lifestyle during the colonial period through antique furniture, paintings, lighting fixtures, and other objects of decorative art. As with all new structures built within the walls of Intramuros, facades here are based on colonial period designs. The museum is a replica of a 19th century Binondo residence where the endeavor is to let know the then culture. In 1981, the Casa Manila was constructed and known as the product of the Intramuros Administration’s initiative to preserve our heritage and showcase the various phases of Philippine life and architecture. Casa Manila is a perfect setting to step back into the past that is in contrast to the fast pace of the city life. It brings the style of living of the Philippine upper class, or ilustrados as they were known at the time. Casa Manila is somewhat called a three-storey house that is faithfully restored Spanish colonial house that also offers an insight to the classic lifestyle. The walls of the ground floor are made of adobe stones that you may see or buy antiques, art objects, and souvenir items. The stones or volcanic tuff was quarried from Makati and Meycuayan, Bulacan for building material. The rooms are set up in period style and decorated with antique furniture, chandeliers, lamps, paintings, vases and bric-a-brac. From the kitchen on the top floor, one can walk down the adobe staircase, old well, the courtyard and fountain. It shows the unique style of architecture and furniture that blends the Spanish and the Asian styles. The Casa Manila Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday; 9 am – 12 pm, 1 pm – 6 pm. Admission: Adults PHP40; children and students PHP15.

Tarsier - Philippines

The Philippines is a tropical country inhabited with several species of indigenous animals, plants, or even micro-organisms. One example of these is the tarsiers, where they mostly live in Bohol Province of the Philippines. It can be found also in some areas of Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. Due to their size which is no longer than an adult man’s hand and weigh only about 113 to 142 grams is considered the smallest primate in the world.
Today, their population is slowly deteriorating and the local government put the tarsier in endangered list. They made several sanctuaries to preserve their species and to protect them from harm.
Like any other tarsiers, the Philippine tarsier’s eyes are fixed in its skull were not able them to turn their sockets. They possess with thin, rough fur which is colored gray to dark brown. The narrow tail is used for their balance, is a naked except for a tuft of hair at the end, and is about twice the body length.
Although the tarsiers are shy nocturnal animal that sleeps during a day, they are still fun loving creatures. I bet everyone wants them to be a pet but it’s not likely to happen because of their smaller in population. They feed with live insects and it has also been observed to feed on spiders, small crustaceans, and small vertebrates such as small lizards and birds. The crickets and grasshoppers are mostly the tarsier will do by carrying the prey to their mouth using both hands.
